Why is prophylaxis important?
The right prophylaxis can ensure healthy
teeth and gums throughout your life. The earlier
you begin looking after your teeth, the better
the prospects of avoiding dental surgery later
on.
Prevention is better than repair
Unfortunately, brushing your teeth regularly is
not enough to prevent tooth decay and
periodontitis. We therefore offer a prophylactic
scheme to supplement dental care at home.
What is professional tooth cleaning?
Professional tooth cleaning is designed
to remove all traces of tartar and plaque, which
are the main cause of decay and periodontitis.
Professional tooth cleaning thus goes far beyond
a normal check-up, the main purpose of which is
to remove calcified plaque.
What is the procedure in professional
tooth cleaning?
It may involve any or all of the
following steps, as appropriate:
- dental examination and explanation of
the treatment
- complete removal of all tartar,
discoloration and plaque on the surfaces of
the accessible teeth and roots
- cleaning of the dental root surfaces and
interproximal spaces that can be accessed
without any periodontal surgery
- polishing crown and/or clinically
visible root surfaces using polishing
instruments and pastes
- control, final cleaning and
fluoridisation
- guidance on proper oral hygiene
How often should professional tooth
cleaning be performed?
Scientific investigations have established that
professional tooth cleaning undertaken at
intervals of between three and six months forms
an ideal supplement to thorough and regular
brushing of the teeth, thereby helping to ensure
healthy teeth and gums. Different intervals may
apply depending on the risk of damage to teeth.
